Seattle WA

Seeing Pike Place Market always makes me think I could handle the 3 months of rain and live in Seattle.  The amazing amount of produce, flowers, fruits, seafood, etc — wow.  It’s a cook’s paradise!

You’ll definitely want to click through the photos as the vibrant colors are amazing.

We ate lunch at Athenian Inn and got an order of fish and chips.  They were very tasty and not very heavy.  We realized later it was because it was fried in something that was healthier (can’t remember what it was though).  Anyway, it was packed but we were able to get a seat in 20 minutes.  It’s very casual but pretty tasty.  Their menu has something that would please anyone.  Oh, and it was cheap (our fish and chips cost $7 each)!  While it may seem like a small plate, it was definitely filling.  For those Sleepless in Seattle fans, this is where Tom Hanks and Rob Reiner had lunch in the movie.

Finally, across the street is the first Starbucks.  It’s completely different than the Starbucks that’s in your area.

As I mentioned, I was in Seattle for a client.  Immediately after we landed, my friend and I went to this fantastic sushi restaurant called Ototo Sushi in Queen Anne’s district.  We’ve both been there before, but we love it.

  • Food:  We ordered a lot of food (we didn’t get a chance to eat lunch because our connection was so short — as in our flight landed as our connecting flight was starting to board).  For our appetizers, we chose steamed seafood wontons and agedashi tofu.  The wontons were fantastic — definitely a good decision!  The fried tofu was good, but it was in so much tempura sauce that it was no longer crispy.  So it wasn’t as good as we were hoping.  Others around us ordered the Tuna Poke — and it did look good!  I ordered mirugai (geoduck), chu-toro and hamachi sashimi.  Then got their scorpion roll (one of their specials) which is tempura prawn, jalapenos, sweet miso with a sprinkle of cayenne pepper.  Wow.  So yummy.  I remember ordering it last time I was there and have absolutely found myself craving it ever since.  Our waitress got confused and thought I had also asked for another roll (think it was the Queen Anne roll), so you’ll see it was on my plate as well.

My food

My friend ordered the spider roll and salmon/avocado/cucumber.  Both very good.

  • Service: Very polite and courteous.  We asked if we could get a number for a taxi cab to get us back to our hotel and instead, the waitress called one for us!
  • Atmosphere: Simple yet casual.  It’s clearly a local neighborhood hangout.
  • Price: $$
  • Overall: I think the fact that I’ve been here once before, traveled from DC to go to the other side of the country, and came back — that says something.  You must try this place.  It’s so good.
